Explore Okonomiyaki Tomoe

Tucked away in the bustling streets of Osaka’s Kita Ward, Okonomiyaki Tomoe offers a truly authentic Japanese dining experience that keeps locals and visitors coming back for more. The restaurant, located in the basement of the Shinyō Daiichi Building, specializes in okonomiyaki, the savory Japanese pancake, and it’s clear from the moment you step in that quality and tradition are at the heart of everything here. The menu may be primarily in Japanese, but the staff go out of their way to help international guests, using gestures, Google Translate, and even an English menu to guide you through the options. Among the standouts is the “Mixed” okonomiyaki, packed with a generous mix of pork, squid, and octopus, offering a delightful medley of flavors and textures in every bite. For something a bit different, the “Negi” variation swaps cabbage for fresh chives, giving a unique twist on the classic dish. The attention to detail isn’t limited to the food-the chef, who is also the owner, greets each customer with warmth and a genuine passion for sharing Japanese cuisine. On repeat visits, she has been known to handcraft onigiri as a special treat, along with small tokens like paper fans, adding a personal touch that makes dining here feel like being welcomed into a friend’s home. The atmosphere is lively yet intimate, often filled with locals, which is a strong signal of the restaurant’s authenticity and consistent quality. Portions are generous, flavors are bold but balanced, and every dish reflects the care and skill of the kitchen. Despite the language barriers, the service is attentive and thoughtful, with staff constantly checking in to ensure everything is prepared just right. Between the rich flavors of the okonomiyaki, the variety of ingredients, and the friendly, hands-on service, Okonomiyaki Tomoe manages to create an experience that feels both classic and memorable, capturing the essence of Osaka street food in a cozy, welcoming setting.

Fabulous place for Okonomiyaki. Made traditional teppen style, I had the mixed modanyaki which was tasty and quite filling. The staff was very friendly and provided me with an English menu as I came in. Pricing was quite reasonable and again, portion was large. The restaurant opens at five which is the best time to get there because the office workers start arriving at six and it starts to get pretty crowded. I travel to Osaka quite a bit for work and I’m glad I found this place. I will definitely be returning!

Great restaurants full of locals! The owners did not speak a word of English and their menu is in Japanese but they do their best to help you out and make sure you're having a good time. We just asked about Okonomiyaki and they pointed to the menu section where we managed to match the katakana to words we somehow knew about (ika for squid, tako for octopus, etc.). When in doubt, we looked at what the other customers where ordering and pointed at it. Highly recommend the "Mixed" (pronounced "mi-ku-su", with porc, octopus and squid) or the "negi" which is an okonomiyaki made with chive instead of cabbage. The owner (we think she was the owner but can't be 100% sure) was so happy to see us a second time that she hand made some Onigiri for us to try and gave my wife some paper fans. Unfortunately, we did not understand most of what she was telling us :-(

I came back here after a year because this Okonomiyaki is the best I’ve ever had! The female chef at this place works so hard and so is the staff. Would 100% recommend and if I come back to Osaka again, I’d definitely revisit!

Amazing okonomiyaki among the after work crowd. Felt lucky to get a table. They have an English menu. The pork kimchi was great as well as the squid pork okonomiyaki. Sadly they were out of negiyaki (green onion) when we came just after 8pm on a Friday.
